Second-Half Comeback Sends No. 8 Nassau By No. 16 GMC

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – No. 8 Nassau Community College scored 14 fourth-quarter points and rallied past No. 16 Georgia Military College 22-14 on a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Long Island.

GMC led 7-6 at halftime and 14-8 late in the third quarter, but Nassau came back with two touchdowns in the final quarter to claim the eight-point win and move to 6-0 on the season.

Nassau took a 6-0 lead with 3:40 to go in the first quarter when Julian Farinola recovered a GMC fumble in the end zone.

But GMC (3-3) came back to take the lead at 7-6 with 3:29 remaining in the first half when Tyler Herman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) hit Dominique Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) on a 31-yard TD pass.

GMC went up 14-6 with 12:27 to go in the third quarter when Herman threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Julian Williams (Suwanee, Ga.).

But Nassau would score the final 16 points, which started with a safety when GMC fumbled the football out the back of the end zone.

That cut the GMC lead to 14-8 with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter.

Nassau took a 15-14 lead with 13:02 to go in the game when Anthony Cruz scored from four yards out and then pushed the advantage to 22-14 with 6:02 left when Cruz scored again on a 7-yard run.

GMC got the ball back on two more possessions in the final five minutes, including one drive that took the Bulldogs down to the Nassau 16 with a first-and-10.

But after three straight incompletions, Herman was stopped inches short of a first down at the Nassau 7-yardline with 3:09 left.

GMC got it back one more time with 1:18 remaining, but couldn’t move as Nassau secured the eight-point win.

GMC had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
GMC will now be home for its final two home games of the season, starting with Tyler Junior College coming to Davenport Field on October 11 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
