Georgia Military College Announces Appointment of Erin Newton as Director of Library Services

Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, President of Georgia Military College is pleased to announce the appointment of Erin Newton to the position of Director of Library Services effective October 1, 2014. Mrs. Newton most recently served as Reference and Instructional Librarian for GMC.

As Director of Library Services, Mrs. Newton will be responsible for the overall administration and management of the library staff and daily operations.  Additionally, she will be responsible to oversee the library support at all of the GMC campuses.  She and the team of library professionals at all GMC campuses work to ensure that both students and faculty receive the necessary support and services that help students succeed both during and after their time at Georgia Military College.

Lieutenant General Caldwell stated he is extremely pleased to have Mrs. Newton lead the Library Services team. “Erin has a great vision for the future of our GMC library services, as well as the enthusiasm and team support to turn that vision into a reality.  She is a collaborator and looks forward to working even more closely with the faculty to make the library and library services something that our students will look back on as a significant contributor to their success.”

Mrs. Newton says, “I joined GMC in 2008 after working at the Gwinnett County Public Library (Five Forks Branch) and the Jack Tarver Library at Mercer University. Libraries should be at the center of every educational institution and that has been my goal from day one as GMC’s Reference and Instruction Librarian. Promoting a love of reading and lifelong learning is what librarians strive to share with everyone they meet and GMC gives me an opportunity to do this every day. I have learned a great deal about our students, faculty, and campuses during my six years with GMC and I am excited to start this next chapter as Director of Library Services.”

Newton graduated from Georgia Southern University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts, earned her Master of Library and Information Science in 2007 from Florida State University, and her Media Specialist Certification from Georgia Southern University this summer. She and her husband Jeff, a graduate of GMC and GCSU, live in Milledgeville, Ga.
