Middle School Students Learn Importance of the Flag

(Milledgeville, GA) April 13, 2004 – During the month of March, an elite group of middle school students had the important responsibility of Flag Detail. Under the guidance of MAJ Ronnie Hammock, GMC Middle School Teacher, seven sixth graders, and three seventh graders participated in this duty by meeting at 7:30 a.m. each school day to raise the nation’s colors, and again at 3:15 p.m. to lower the flag. MAJ Hammock said, “A group of students was selected in November 2003, which originally consisted of four sixth graders and three seventh graders who had participated last year. To my surprise, an additional three sixth graders also came to school early in case there was an opportunity to help. Because of their interest and commitment I decided to add those students to the roster as well, which brought our flag detail to ten members. This duty allows the students to learn the importance of the flag, its care and handling. The group has been extremely dedicated to their special job and their performance has been superb.”

Members of the middle school flag detail are, 7th grade: Chelsea Colburn, Page Jackson, Jordan Sauls; 6th grade: Landon Castillo, David Dudley, Kip Goss, Matthew Harrison, Alexandra Levendis, Drew Sanders, LaStarza Thomas.
