GMC Prep School Participates in WWI Memorial Ceremony

On the heels of the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, the Milledgeville community gathered together on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, to honor three Baldwin County natives who died during World War I: Private Willie Warren, Private Alex Threat, and Private Augustus “Gus” Austin. The event took place at Shiloh Baptist Church, in the Harrisburg community, where a memorial stands in honor of the fallen Baldwin County men.

Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, President of Georgia Military College, and GMC Board of Trustees Vice-Chairman, George Hogan, both shared remarks at the event about the significance of the sacrifice Warren, Threat, and Austin made to protect their country.

Students at GMC Prep School were in attendance, which Lieutenant Colonel Scott Seagraves, Georgia History Teacher at GMC Prep School, says was a great learning opportunity for those students.

“The act of remembering these gentlemen from Baldwin County brings to life the sacrifice of all the men and women of all races and socio-economic backgrounds that came together for a common cause,” Seagraves said. “Our students are not necessarily able to put a face to the name, but they are able to put names to a historical event, in this case the names of people from their hometown. This event got them outside of the classroom and showed them the humanity of this war.”

The World War I Armistice Day 100th Anniversary was in November of 2018.
