Posted in Local MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It’s been nearly 18 years since a STAR student in Baldwin County chose a parent as their star teacher.Georgia Military Academy Preparatory School 2014 STAR student, Kevin Myers was awarded Baldwin County “STAR Student of the Year.”Baldwin High school’s, Elizabeth Harpe, and John Milledge Academy’s, Julie Hinson were also awarded during the star student banquet.
Elizabeth Harpe says she already has an idea of colleges she like to attend in the fall.””I’ve already been accepted to the University of Alabama,” says Harpe. “But I’m waiting for letters from Harvard, Princeton, and Dartmouth, so I have my fingers crossed.””I’m going to the University of Georgia in the fall,” says Hinson. “Go dawgs!”This is the 29th year the Milledgeville- Baldwin County’s Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the STAR student banquet.Kevin Myers said he had no idea he would become the county’s STAR Student.”I was actually incredibly shocked to find out I was a star student,” says Kevin Myers. “It wasn’t an easy task. But, I’m very proud to have gotten that and shocked obviously.”He chose his father as his STAR Teacher. That has not happened since 1996, according to chamber’s president and CEO, April Bragg.Charles Myers says Georgia Military Academy faculty and staff helped him in achieving academic success for his son.”We did try to set a foundation in the sixth grade and I had the priviledge of not being only his teacher but his father,” says Myers. “So, he not only got it at school, he got it at home.”
