A Message from President Caldwell on Vietnam War Veterans Day

In the GMC yearbook from 1957, James Emory Jones, or “Jimmy” as he was known by his classmates, has a strong jawline, and a sharp, determined gaze. His mouth looks stoic, but his eyes seem to be smiling—so much that it almost creates the illusion that the corners of his lips are slightly upturned. He’s a young cadet who appears poised and serious.

Jimmy played in the GMC band, and he went on to become an Army “Green Beret” as a member of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), one of our Army’s most storied Special Forces units.

On October 3, 1966, then SFC Jones, along with 6 other Green Berets, was on a MACV-Special Operations Group (SOG) operation into the Savannakhet Province of Laos near the border with Vietnam. For these “over the fence” missions, men had to be trained for jungle survival and advanced recon techniques. They were among the most dangerous missions of the war. According to SOG veteran and author John Plaster, 100 percent of the SOG recon men were wounded, and 50 percent were killed in action (KIA).

The 7-man recon team immediately came under enemy fire and called for an extraction, but due to heavy gunfire, the helicopter was unable to land.

The men were surrounded in a 360-degree kill zone.

Nobody witnessed the death of James Emory Jones in Laos, and he was therefore classified as missing in action (MIA), later changed to KIA.

SGM James Emory Jones’s name is located on Panel 11E Line 42 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund also curates an online “Wall of Faces,” which features a picture of James in uniform. Even though he’s older, he has the same serious expression and the same smiling eyes as the boy in his yearbook photo.

Georgia Military College is tremendously proud to claim this brave young man who served with honor and distinction and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country as our alum. In the song, Ballad of the Green Berets, the Green Berets are called “America’s Best.” We know that was true of Jimmy.

On this Vietnam War Veterans Day, we remember SGM James “Jimmy” Emory Jones, along with all of those who answered their nation’s call to serve in the Vietnam War.
