2003 GMC/Lew Cordell Memorial Golf Tournament Tees Off Once Again April 28th

The 12th annual GMC/Lew Cordell Golf Tournament will be held Monday, April 28 at the Milledgeville Country Club. The yearly fundraiser for the GMC Junior College Booster Club promises to be the best yet with two new additions to the day’s events. Former PGA player and UGA alum Tim Simpson will be on hand to provide a demonstration of iron striking at 10:15am at the 10th tee box. Tim is a five-time winner as a professional with 66 Top 10 finishes in his PGA career. Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers will join Tim at the tournament. The former USC Gamecock from Duluth, GA will be on hand to challenge tournament players on the 5th hole. “We are excited to have these two great athletes and gentlemen agree to be a part of our tournament. I think all of our participants and the GMC family will thoroughly enjoy meeting these two accomplished professionals,” commented Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Bert Williams.
The field for the tournament appears to be one of the largest yet. Williams said, “We have 35 teams of four committed to playing this year with a week to go, and we put a limit of 36 teams on the field to make sure the players don’t get too slowed down. We have some great prizes for the 1st through 4th place finishes in each flight, so there will be some good competition as well on the course.” Coach Williams is quick to point out, however, that the tournament would not be possible without the help from many in the Milledgeville community. “There is no way we could have the success we have had with this tournament without the help from so many of our local businesses and individuals. In addition to our four tournament sponsors, Applebee’s’, Milledgeville Coca-Cola United, GMAC, and Bob Pittard Pro Sports Inc., and the Hole-In-One sponsor Butler Ford, many have donated prizes and sponsored teams and holes in order to help us in our efforts to support our junior college football team. Those who have sponsored, donated, and played in this tournament have been a major component in the success we have enjoyed the last two seasons.”
