Meet GMC’s Prep School new Associate Principal
Dr. Steve Greer, Command Sergeant Major, US Army (Ret), is the new Associate Principal for Georgia Military College’s (GMC) Prep School. Greer is responsible for cadet discipline and supporting all athletic programs. As second in command at the Prep School, he will support and implement the guidance and directives of Principal, Colonel Pam Grant.
“First and foremost I plan to embrace the culture of GMC and work tirelessly every day to support the team and our mission, “said Dr. Steve Greer, GMC’s Prep School Associate Principal. “I hope to serve as a tremendous role model for our students and help guide them towards success long after they leave the halls of the Prep School.”
Greer refers to himself as an “Army brat.” He was born in Fort Campbell, KY., during his father’s deployment to Vietnam. Greer spent many years in Northern Virginia while his father was assigned to various positions at the Pentagon, Fort Belvoir, and the Washington D.C. metro area. He’s made education a top priority and says he is huge fan of life-long learning. In 2008, he graduated from Capella University with a PhD in Education.
“Following a rather dismal start out of high school, where my Grade Point Average (GPA) was a 1.66, I made it my personal mission to embrace the value of higher education,” said Greer. “During my 20 years in the Army, I managed to complete an Associates, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree while juggling some very challenging assignments as an Army Ranger and Special Forces soldier. In essence, I quickly embraced the idea of distance education and recognized the tremendous opportunities it provided me, as well as my soldiers, to earn a post-secondary education while still serving our nation in uniform.”
Greer enlisted in the Army in 1982 and retired after 20 years in 2003. He served across the globe in Honduras, Panama, Morocco, Sierra Leon, Kenya, Trinidad, Egypt, Kosovo, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Greer competed in the annual LTG David E. Grange, Jr., Best Ranger Competition four times placing 3rd in 1995.
Following retirement, Greer was recruited by Fox News Channel in Washington, D.C., where he provided on-air commentary as a military analyst from 2003-2007. He also served as a member of Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s Military Analyst Group and as a Senior Fellow at the National Defense Council Foundation.
Before coming to GMC, Greer served for eight years as an Army JROTC Senior Army Instructor at Dodge County High School in Eastman, Ga. He also started and coached the wrestling program at the school for both middle and high school teams. Greer says it was the character of the cadets that brought him to GMC.
“In 2007, I met two Prep School cadets at the State Drill Competition,” said Greer. “I was so impressed with their demeanor, bearing, and appearance that I knew right away GMC was truly a special place. My wife and I are excited to have our children attending the Prep School and learning from such a professional faculty and staff. I have a great deal of respect for our cadets and their commitment to the values and guiding principles that make our country great.”
In 2011, Greer was a Top 10 Georgia Teacher of the Year Finalist. He is married to his wife, Jennifer, who is a former soldier. They have two children, Aiden, 16, and Abby,14.
