High School team heads to Odyssey of the Mind World Finals

Congratulations to the GMC Prep high school team which earned first place (Division III) in the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament held on April 14, 2012 at Columbus State University. The team members are Taylore Brooks, Elliot Fairbrass, Liam Fairbrass, Jostin Grimes, Kris Irvin, Sara Poole, and Haley Spires. The team’s challenge was to design, build, and drive a vehicle that would travel a course where it would encounter three different situations. The vehicle had to display a different human emotion for each encounter, with one causing it to travel in reverse. The team was required to create a theme for the presentation that incorporated the vehicle and the different emotions. The emphasis was on the technical risk-taking and creativity of the vehicle’s engineering for travel and change of emotional appearance. GMC’s team will represent Georgia at the 33rd Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa May 23-26, where they will compete with teams from across the nation and around the world. Odyssey of the Mind (www.odysseyofthemind.com) is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Teams of students apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem-solving, students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems — great and small — for a lifetime.
