GMC Rifle Team Dogs Nip Tigers
Georgia Military College Rifle Team traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to participate in the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference #3 October 19, 2013. There were fifty shooters competing in five relays, three air rifle and two small bore, under NCAA rules and regulations. The teams were North Carolina State, University Alabama-Birmingham, Clemson, University North Georgia, The Citadel, Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C. and Georgia Military College. In the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference North Carolina State took first with a team score of 2309, Citadel 274, University North Georgia 2268, University Alabama-Birmingham 2230, Georgia Military College 2151 and Clemson 2096. In the individual air rifle competition Leigh Yarborough, of Piedmont Community College, took first place with a 581 out of a perfect score of 600. While the teams were performing at the Inouye Marksmanship Center, fans were watching the match tracked via targets at www.citadelmatchscores.com. The Citadel range has electronic scoring and each relay for the shooters is one hour and fifteen minutes. During competition shooters shoot sixty shots from 10 meters in the standing position. As one of the parents mentioned, “…watching my son shoot on line was exciting, I kept telling him to slow down”. Luke Torres, who hails from Palmetto, Florida, carded top shooter for the four man GMC team with scores of 88, 91, 91, 94, 88, 88 out of 100 points for each target. His personal best scores totaled 540. Captain Cameron Smith of Macon, Georgia captured his personal best with scores of 89, 92, 92, 91, 90, and 84 for 538. Taking the third spot for the GMC team was Tyler Willingham of Rochelle, Georgia. He shot his personal best scores 87, 91, 93, 92, 88, for 538. Cameron Smith’s score was equal to Willingham’s but he took second place with 12 tens to 9. The number of tens on a target are used to determine tie breakers. Ariel Vasquez from Palmetto, Florida was GMC’s fourth team shooter. He shot his personal best of 89, 89, 88, 89, 90, and 90 for a total of 535. The combined scores of the four team members was an outstanding record for GMC with a 2151. Alex Bueler, Cameron Schneberger, Robin Rochester and Howard Lane were other members of GMC’s rifle team. Their shooting scores ranged from 495 to 527. Each of the eight college shooters who represented GMC were successful in shooting personal best scores. The next match is scheduled for November 2, 2013 at Wofford, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
