The goal is raise enough funds so that every grave at the cemetery will have a wreath on Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 14. Wreaths Across America is a nationwide program started in 1992 and held each year at national and state cemeteries to “remember, honor and teach the value of freedom in the world today,” according to the group’s website, www.wreathsacrossmaerica.com. Each member of the Raider team is taking part in the Veterans Day ceremonies on Monday at the Georgia War Veterans Home before making the march to the Georgia War Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Each Raider will carry a 20 to 30 pound rucksack as they march. Once at the cemetery, students will participate in the flag laying ceremonies before marching back to GMC. Each wreath costs the team $15. The community is encouraged to sponsor the Raider team by donating any amount as cash or checks, made payable to GMC Raiders, and mailed to SFC Swars, Raider WAA fundraiser, GMC Prep School, 201 E. Greene St., Milledgeville, Ga. 31061. Team members will also visit workplaces to collect donations before Monday. The GMC Prep School Raider team is a group of 24 male and female high school students that compete statewide in JROTC Raider events. Raiders is a program offered by JROTC that focuses on physical fitness, endurance, and building team work and leadership skills.
