Georgia Military College Students to Compete in National Two-Year College Ethics Bowl Championship in Chicago
Six cadets from Georgia Military College (GMC) at Milledgeville have been selected to present and debate at the national championship of the two-year college Ethics Bowl 2014 in Chicago on March 15. The Ethics Bowl is a presentation of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) to provide a greater opportunity for students across the nation to leverage the benefits of researching contemporary ethical issues, refining and polishing critical thinking skills, developing core values, and ultimately helping them become future leaders in their communities and professions. Barbara Roth-Johnson, administrative assistant and housing officer at GMC, is the coach of the 2014 Ethics Bowl GMC Milledgeville team. She says the emphasis on character education at GMC makes the Ethics Bowl the perfect venue for cadets to further their abilities in critical thinking as it applies to morality. “Community service, respect and a ‘do the right thing’ attitude are qualities we strive to ingrain in the students at GMC,” says Roth-Johnson. “The very foundation of the school is to uphold excellent ethical standards. This competition allows the cadets to further solidify their character study through learning how to take a moral dilemma, quickly determine an opinion, then persuasively present and debate that opinion. “It has been very rewarding to work with this team as they prepare debates for the 12 ethical cases the APPE provides,” says Roth-Johnson, who was a judge in the 2013 Ethics Bowl. “The team must prepare to debate an ethical question — which remains completely confidential until the moment of debate —on any of the 12 cases. With such rigorous standards, a special camaraderie continues to develop with this team as they learn how to express different opinions while coming to a consensus on a given topic. It is truly inspiring to watch!” The 2014 GMC Milledgeville Ethics Bowl Team members are: Matthew Abdalla, 19, State Service Cadet, of Canton, Ga. Tess Heimerman, 18, Coast Guard Academy candidate, of Camden, Ga. John Ivester, 26, Early Commissioning Program, of Sherrills Ford, N.C. Michael McClure, 19, State Service Cadet, of Camden, Ga. Jerrick McIntosh, 22, State Service Cadet, of Augusta, Ga. Aaron Rawls, 20, State Service Cadet, of Warner Robins, Ga. Sarah Williams, 19, Coast Guard, of Giltner, Neb. (team member not competing in nationals due to prior commitment) In addition to the GMC Milledgeville Ethic Bowl Team, a student team from GMC Augusta will also participate in the Ethics Bowl in Chicago.
