Georgia Military College Expands Liberal Arts Course Offerings

January 10, 2003 – When GMC junior college students signed up for winter quarter classes, a new option was listed among the schedule of courses – music appreciation. Students were also offered the opportunity to join the GMC junior college chorus, which was added to the list of extracurricular activities available for each and every student. Concert pianist, Ms. Moona S. Yu, has joined the GMC junior college faculty as a full-time professor and will teach the music appreciation course at the main campus in Milledgeville and at GMC’s satellite center in Madison. Ms. Yu will also direct the junior college chorus, which will perform throughout the year, and she will perform piano concerts as part of GMC’s schedule of cultural events for the students and community. Born in Seoul, Korea, Ms. Moona Yu came to the United States when she was 18 to attend the University of Northern Iowa to study piano. She chose this particular school because of the encouragement she received from a University of Northern Iowa professor who visited her high school in Korea. Ms. Yu earned a bachelor of arts in music and a master of art in piano performance from the University, and while in Iowa also met her husband, Scott; they moved to Georgia in 1987. Her long list of solo and professional accompanying experience includes private concerts for distinguished guests of Georgia Military College, recitals for various churches and high schools, and an array of competitions. Dr. Paula Payne, GMC junior college humanities division chairperson, says, “We are extremely happy to add Moona’s expertise to our humanities program. Because our enrollments have continued to increase, it was necessary for us to expand our liberal arts course offerings, as well as our faculty, and Moona was the best person for the job.” Ms. Moona Yu and her husband, Scott, reside in Woodstock, Georgia with their children Peter, 8th grade, Hannah, 6th grade, and Lili, 4 years old.
