GMC Prep School Real Drill Team Sets School Records in Area 4 Region and Georgia State Drill Competitions

The Georgia Military College Prep School Drill Team (known as The Real Drill Team) under the leadership of SFC Van Dexter Rutledge recently competed in the Area Four Drill Competition and victoriously marched away with 12 medals.

Cadet Captain Dawn Hayward placed 1st in the Female Individual Exhibition and Cadet PFC Caroline Hooks placed 2nd in this event. Cadets Hayward and Hooks combined their skills to place 1st in the Female Dual Competition.

Cadet Zack Guyton placed 4th in the Male Individual Exhibition.

Cadet Captain Rick Griffin and Cadet Lieutenant Will Parker placed 1st in the Male Dual Exhibition and were awarded a perfect score by the judges. Cadet Sergeant First Class Quinton Weekly and Cadet Command Sergeant Major Kip Goss placed second in this event and Cadets Blake Brown and Nick Nolan placed 4th.

Cadet Command Sergeant Major Kip Goss was impressive as he placed 2nd in the Knockout Drill. The Knockout Drill began with over 230 cadets who must properly execute all stationary movement immediately when the command is given. Failure to comply with commands resulted in cadet elimination.

GMC’s Real Drill team then headed to the Georgia State Drill Meet Competition at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Competition was fierce as there were 79 schools competing at this prestigious event. But, once again GMC demonstrated the precision skills and sharp military bearing earning 4 Georgia State medals.

Winners at Georgia State Drill meet were Cadet Captain Dawn Hayward who placed 2nd in the Female Individual Exhibition, Cadet Captain Rick Griffin and Cadet First Lieutenant Will Parker placed 3rd in the Male Dual Competition and Cadet Staff Sergeant Guyton who placed 5th in the Male Individual Competition.

Three GMC Prep school records were broken this season: Cadet Captain Dawn Hayward became the first GMC cadet to win 1st place in both Female Individual and Dual Competition. Cadet Captain Rick Griffin and Cadet First Lieutenant Will Parker received a perfect score at the Region Competition. Cadet Kip Goss placing 2nd in the Knockout drill was a first for a GMC cadet.

The GMC Real Drill Team had a great season and looks forward to dominating these categories and competing in other categories next year as they have a lot of young developing talent coming up.
