Habitat for Humanity Founders Coming to GMC

Millard and Linda Fuller, founders of Habitat for Humanity, will be in Milledgeville on April 21 to help raise $5,000 for a Youth United branch being organized here. The Fullers will visit Georgia Military College at 11:15 a.m. and will meet with students in Jenkins Hall Auditorium. Milledgeville has been selected as one of two pilot sites for Youth United in the southeast.

Youth United is a branch of Habitat for Humanity that seeks to engage youth ages 5 to 25 in promoting youth leadership, diversity and involvement by challenging young people to take an active part in eliminating poverty housing in their communities.

The local Youth United program is uniquely led by a steering committee made up of young adults (ages 16 plus) from local schools, Georgia Military College and Georgia College & State University.

The committee began meeting in October and is now faced with the challenge of raising $5,000 by April 15 to match a previously received grant.

The steering committee has also made several accomplishments, such as qualifying for a $5,000 grant, setting up several sub-committees to help lead the organization and scheduling.

Youth involved in Youth United are challenged to raise funds and build Habitat homes in their community. While younger children play an active role in fund-raising, older youth are also encouraged to work with on-site construction.

Not only does Youth United provide young people with a chance to reach out to others and grow as individuals, but it also provides homeowner children with a meaningful Habitat experience and allows young energy and creativity to be brought to the organization.

Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing from the world, organizing affiliates in more than 3,000 communities in 92 nations that have built and sold more than 150,000 homes to partner families with no-profit, zero-interest mortgages.

Donations to help the local Youth United steering committee can be mailed to P.O. Box 605, Milledgeville, Ga. 31059.
