Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2022 Coach of the Year

Georgia Military College’s Men’s Head Soccer Coach, David Sexton was named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s (GCAA) 2022 Coach of the Year.

This is Coach Sexton’s ninth season as the Head Coach of the Men’s Soccer Team. Sexton has won the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Region Coach of the Year seven times while being the Head Soccer Coach at GMC and another eight times while coaching at Louisburg College, making this his 15th NJCAA Region Coach of the Year Honor. In addition, he was named Southeast District coach of the year five times.

Coach Sexton has 25 years of experience coaching soccer in the U.K. and the U.S. He also has club coaching experience in his native country, England, and ODP experience in North Carolina and Georgia. He holds a Union of European Football Association (UEFA) “A” coaching license and a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” coaching license.

GMC Junior College Athletic Director, Rob Manchester said “We are so proud of Coach Sexton for winning this prestigious honor. He represents all GMC stands for and is an inspiration to all. We are lucky to have him in our GMC family.”

Coach Sexton has led the Bulldogs to unprecedented success. In 2021 he guided the team to a 14-3-1 record, their 6th straight NJCAA Region 17 Championship and a birth in semifinals of the 2021 NJCAA National Championship Tournament. This year the team experienced success again as they amassed a 11-3-1 record and again won NJCAA Region 17 Championship. This is the second consecutive year the team made it to the NJCAA National Championship. Although they did not advance after the first round, they had a terrific season under Coach Sexton’s direction.

More than forty GMC Men’s Soccer Players received NJCAA 1st Team All-Region Honors during Sexton’s time coaching at GMC. This year eight players were tapped with the honor: Elijah Dixon, Carlos Maldonado, Johan Merlos, Andre Bruno, Christian Tejeda, Brian Ahearn and Julian Rivera. In addition, Julian Rivera was named the Player of The Year.
