Rick Griffin and GMC Prep stifle Wilkinson County Tuesday, 1-0

March 17, 2010 Union Recorder Rick Griffin and GMC Prep stifle Wilkinson County Tuesday, 1-0 Rick Griffin did it again yesterday afternoon and boy, was it pretty.
Always making his presence known and establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in middle Georgia, GMC Prep’s senior ace was ready with an arsenal of steady pitches Tuesday, shutting down rival Wilkinson County, 1-0, in a game that could’ve easily gone either way.
In the game, Griffin gave up only two hits and recorded a jaw-dropping 15 strikeouts in a victory over their neighboring rivals.
GMC Prep’s fleet-footed Donovan Smith was the leading hitter Tuesday, batting a perfect 2 for 2 with two walks, and he also recorded three stolen bases.
Smith, who proved to be the Bulldog’s pivotal base runner, got on first in the seventh inning and quickly stole second base before moving to third on a wild pitch.
GMC Prep’s Dylan Watkins then executed a sacrifice fly to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Bulldogs a key victory at home.
GMC Prep head baseball coach Garry Couch, who has been regrouping the team after a tough injury to starting catcher Matthew Harrison, appears to have his team on the right track and coached a gem Tuesday afternoon.
“Rick pitched an awesome game. The guys played great and they are going to be OK,” said Couch after the game.
The Bulldogs are now 2-1 in region play and will next face Washington-Wilkes on the road at 5 p.m. Friday.
GMC’s next home game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. March 22 versus Lincoln County. Schedule updates can be found at https://www.couchclan.org/sports/ baseball.htm
