Prep tops SRC in season opener

GMC Prep tops SRC in season opener Steven Cary The Union-Recorder The Union-Recorder Sat Aug 27, 2011, 12:01 AM EDT MILLEDGEVILLE — The first quarter proved to be a fumble fest Friday night at Davenport Field as Georgia Military College Prep School took on the Strong Rock Christian Patriots in a season opener for both teams, but the Bulldogs pulled together late in the quarter and took complete control of the game. On Strong Rock’s first possession senior Andreus Warthen, cornerback, made a game-changing play as he gunned down a Patriot receiver to force a fumble on the play that would have easily ended up as a Patriot touchdown giving SRC the early lead. “When you get a college prospect player, they are going to make big plays,” Brad Owens, head coach, said. “He saved the play and that’s a great thing.” The Bulldogs went on to outscore Strong Rock in front of the home crowd 23-0, earning their first win of the season. “That’s the key, we’ve struggled at home in the past,” Owens said. “I’m very proud of them, they played like a million bucks out there.” One of the keys to the offensive success came out of the backfield, as Colby Lawrence, tailback, had several big plays on the night, including scoring the first six points of the game for the Bulldogs. “Colby is going to be a fantastic player,” Owens said. “He had a great game tonight and he’s going to be good for us.” Up front, the Bulldogs offensive line came up big for the team as they gave both Wayne Griffin and Billy Whitlock, quarterbacks, plenty of time to get rid of the football, and also allowed the strong stable of Bulldog running backs to make big gains on each play. “I’m extremely proud of our offensive line,” Owens said. “They were lining up against guys that were bigger and they took care of business and wore them out.” Owens also had a great showing on defense, as they shutout SRC on the night. “The defense flew around all over the place,” he said, “and I loved it.” After a dominating performance for the Bulldogs against Strong Rock last night the GMC Prep squad will look to take down the 1-0 Prince Avenue Wolverines in Athens Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
