New GMC JC offense revs up in annual Spring Scrimmage QBs Nico Ranieri and Dylan Shaddix account for four scores; receivers Lonnie Outlaw and Corey Washington amass 176 yards and four tds; former Baldwin star Javontae Edwards executing well in the backfield GMC JC Sports Communications The Union-Recorder The Union-Recorder Fri May 20, 2011, 08:00 AM EDT MILLEDGEVILLE — New Offensive Coordiantor Ross Robinson has brought many fresh ideas into Milledgeville and the GMC JC Football program, and their first showing in the GMC Spring Scrimmage was pretty impressive. The Bulldog offense racked up nearly 500-yards and five touchdowns in a 100-plus play scrimmage in front of several hundred fans at the GMC JC practice fields. Quarterback transfer Nico Ranieri looked impressive running both the first and second team units of the GMC offense, and made very few mental mistakes. Ranieri’s passing stats were solid as was 8 for 13 for126 yards and two touchdowns while adding 24 rushing yards as well. “Nico has quickly grasped the new offensive scheme coach Robinson and our offensive staff have put together and he did a great job of executing it this afternoon. He didn’t make many mistakes and he let our playmakers make plays,” commented GMC JC head coach Bert Williams. Willisams was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame last season. Returning quarterback Dylan Shaddix also had some bright moments on the afternoon, going 7 for 16 for 158 yards and two touchdowns himself. Both quarterbacks took advantage of last year’s leading receivers, Lonie Outlaw and Corey Washington, who combined for eight receptions for 176 yards and four touchdowns between themselves. “Corey and Lonnie did well in the passing game today, but after last year, we kind of expect big things from them,” said Williams. Adrian Wigfall was the biggest surprise at the receiver position, making several impressive catches and runs which combined for 115 yards of total offense. Sophomore runningback R.J. Robinson led the way on the ground with 68 yards on 12 carries and a score, but local standout (and former Baldwin High star) Javontae Edwards established himself as one to be dealt with in 2011 with nearly 50 yards himself on some very physical running. “Javontae has really had a good spring and we feel very comfortable right now with him on the field. We expect good things from him this fall,” added Williams. The first defensive unit for the Bulldogs looked very impressive as well. The scrimmage mostly put the first offensive unit against the second defensive unit and vice versa, and when the first unit was in, it was very stingy. Sophomore Daniel McCullers, at 6’6, 380 pounds, has become quite popular with recruiters and showed why. At the scrimmage, McCullers shut down pretty much everything inside when he was in the game. GMC’s Jalen Fields and FraShad Hunter locked down the outside of the line as well and safety Brant Salley made several big plays on the day. Newcomer Reynard Reid had perhaps the biggest play of the day, taking a deflected pass interception in the endzone and returning it 102 yards for a score. “I was very pleased with our defense this spring. We re-committed ourselves to being a pressure oriented defense and the guys responded very well. Coach Manchester and our defensive staff have done a great job teaching and motivating our guys. I look forward to seeing them in the fall.” concluded Williams. The 2011 season will begin Sept. 3 with defending national champion Navarro College comes to Davenport Field.
