Guest speaker for the ceremony was Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV (Ret.), president of Georgia Military College. Caldwell spoke on the special role the community plays in promoting peace. Literacy, Caldwell said, also plays an instrumental part in spreading peace, and everyone has a role in helping others attain it, thereby impacting the world.‘Without the ability to read and write, one will be unable to improve their lives … if someone can read and write they are empowered,’ Caldwell said. Baldwin County became the first Rotary Peace Community in the nation in September 1995. The following year, the group dedicated the large peace monument that stands in front of the Baldwin County Courthouse at the corner of Wilkinson and Hancock streets.
