GMC to Host Inaugural National Junior College Ethics Bowl
Georgia Military College will host the first National Junior College Ethics Bowl on April 13, 2013 in Milledgeville. The event will include more than ten teams from across the United States that will compete for the national title. This will be the first junior college version of the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl that has been going on for 17 years. GMC Professor and ethics bowl coordinator, Rob Sherwood says, “The Association of Practical and Professional Ethics agreed to allow the creation of a junior college version of the established ethics bowl in order to meet the unique needs of two-year colleges across the country. Because of Georgia Military College’s character education program and past participation in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, GMC has been marked as a leader in ethics education and is honored to host the inaugural event.” New York Life provided a generous grant to offset the cost of conducting the event. Teams are expected from Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Alabama, and Pennsylvania The Junior College Ethics Bowl will follow the same criteria as Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. It will be a team competition that combines the excitement and fun of a competitive tournament with an innovative approach to education in practical and professional ethics for undergraduate students. In advance of the competition, each team receives a set of cases that raise issues in practical and professional ethics. At the competition, a moderator poses questions suggested by the various cases. A panel of judges will encourage participants to justify their arguments and will evaluate answers. Rating criteria include intelligibility, focus on ethically relevant considerations, avoidance of ethical irrelevance, and deliberative thoughtfulness. “We are actively soliciting community members to serve as judges for this competition which will feature some of the brightest young minds in our nation discussing relevant ethical topics pertinent to us all,” said Sherwood.
