GMC sits atop national junior college poll

By MICHAEL A. LOUGH — mlough@macon.com Georgia Military College has to do plenty of traveling throughout the college football season. So far, the road trips have been fun and successful, so much so that GMC is spending the week as the No. 1 team in junior college football. GMC ended Iowa Western’s 18-game winning streak with last week’s 48-28 victory, and it was enough to push the Bulldogs from No. 5 to No. 1. East Mississippi made a one-spot jump to second, while No. 1 Navarro and No. 2 Iowa Western fell to eighth and seventh, respectively, after losses. Safety Corey Neely also earned National Junior College Athletic Association defensive player of the week for his performance against Iowa Western. The freshman from Rock Hill, S.C. had five tackles, one for loss, two pass breakups and two interceptions, one going for an 85-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs are 5-0 and will try to hold on to the top spot when they visit Ellsworth (Iowa) Community College on Saturday. Ellsworth is 2-3 and lost 61-0 to Iowa Western a month ago. GMC then is at home for a national showdown when the Bulldogs welcome fifth-ranked Nassau, which is 5-0.
