September 5, 2013 GMC Prep optimistic in week two Steven Cary The Union-Recorder The Union-Recorder Thu Sep 05, 2013, 01:00 PM EDT MILLEDGEVILLE — Coming off a hard-fought loss in their season-opener last week, Georgia Military Prep School looks to rebound Friday night in their second-straight home game against Glascock County. The Bulldogs approach the match-up with a renewed confidence after dropping their first contest of the season to Harlem. “I feel like we’re confident and the kids are confident,” Steven Simpson, head coach, said. “The kids were able to see it was a matter of three or four plays that lost us the game.” Simpson and his staff understand that GMC Prep will struggle if Friday’s conditions are similar to last Friday night, as the team’s depth is limited. “Our kids play both ways and special teams, so they don’t have many chances to come off the field,” Simpson said. “The good news is that Glascock will be in a similar boat we’re in this week.” Glascock comes into the game sitting at 1-1 on the season, sporting formations that the Bulldogs most likely will not see much of the rest of the season. “Glascock, they’re a ‘Wing-T’ team. They run something different than other teams,” Simpson said. Simpson believes the Panthers will be a tough football team to beat this Friday night. “Their kids play hard and play every down. Every time you play Glascock, you know what you’re getting, but they never try to do what they’re not capable of doing,” he said. “You don’t really get an easy one against them.” While GMC Prep came up short last week, Simpson admits the team played well and intends to implement a similar game plan against the Panthers. “I’m not real sure how much we’ll do differently,” he said. “We did what we wanted to do, but we just made some mistakes while we did it.” The Bulldogs hope to eliminate mistakes against Glascock in the second week of high school football, especially on special teams. “Some things we learned, like to not field punts inside the 10-yard line, you can’t learn in practice,” Simpson said. The first-year head coach also expects his non-starters to be more prepared this week to handle the workload that comes with playing at the varsity level. “There are some things we learned as a coaching staff like work on our depth,” Simpson said. “We’ve got seven seniors and four juniors, so we’re extremely young. The rest of the team is freshmen and sophomores that are having to play.” Regardless of the team’s youth and depth, Simpson expects the Bulldogs to come out tomorrow night with their heads up and ready to play. “Their spirit’s not broken,” he said. “Our kids are very positive.” GMC Prep and Glascock go head-to-head Friday night at Davenport Field with the opening kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
