GMC names new softball coach

The Union Recorder August 7, 2010 GMC names new softball coach CNHI MILLEDGEVILLE — Ashley Mayhue has accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the GMC softball program.

Mayhue comes to GMC after serving three years as assistant coach at NCAA Division II powerhouse Valdosta State University.

Mayhue’s time at Valdosta State was marked by great success in the program. The Blazers won the Gulf South Conference title in 2009 and 2010, advancing into the national tournament in 2010.

In 2010, the Blazers nearly captured the national championship after finishing as the national runner-up to Hawaii-Pacific after a narrow 4-3 loss. Along with head coach Thomas Macera and the rest of the VSU staff, Mayhue was named as the South Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010.

Mayhue has strong local ties as she was a standout student athlete for Jones County High School. She attended Chipola College after graduating and finished her collegiate playing career at Valdosta State University where she achieved Academic All-America Honors as a pitcher and utility player for the Blazers.

In her three years as the assistant coach for the Blazers, VSU has accumulated a overall record of 154-35, won two conference titles, a national runner-up finish in 2010, and developed six All-Americans.

Mayhue also was responsible for coordinating community service efforts for the softball program at VSU.

“I was pleased by the quality of candidates who applied for our softball position and very excited to offer the job to a young lady who has such a strong track record of success as a student-athlete, a coach and role model for her players. She will be a perfect fit here at Georgia Military College, and I am looking forward to where she will take our quickly improving softball program,” commented GMC athletic director Bert Williams.
