GMC hosts largest intercollegiate rifle match of season

Georgia Military College’s collegiate rifle team hosted a head to head competition for six intercollegiate teams from across the southeast. The teams included shooters from Georgia Southern University, Clemson, The Citadel, University of Alabama – Birmingham, Wofford College, and the University of North Georgia. These excellent colleges and universities brought in forty shooters who competed against each other as well as the eight shooters from our own Georgia Military College Bulldog Team. This brought the total number of shooters to 48 who competed in the largest head to head match of the season. This was GMC’s final regular match of the season as they will head to The Citadel on 20 February to compete in the sectionals and then on 8 and 9 March will defend their National ROTC Championship trophy against other competitors across the country. This weekend’s match was a hard fought contest with University of North Georgia winning the match with a team score of 2304. They won the match scoring 35 points higher than the Citadel. GMC’s top shooter for the weekend was Cadet Alex Bueler who scored 539 points. GMC’s top four shooters who comprised our team for this weekend consisted of Cadet Bueler with a score of 539, Cadet Torres who scored 537, Mr. Smith (a commuter student) who scored 529, and Cadet Vasquez who scored 513. Team instructors Mary Ellen Eaton and LTC Duane Clayton were pleased with the team score of 2118. We have now set a new overall team goal to score at least 2250 for the championship match in March.
Georgia Military College’s rifle team continues to progress each week. The team is exactly where they should be as they head into the Southeastern Sectional competition on 20 February and to the National competition two weeks following the Sectional competition. Both rifle meets will be conducted at The Citadel. Go Dogs!!!
