GMC Columbus’ Student Government Association Hosts Food Drive For National Make A Difference Day

In honor of National Make A Difference Day, the Georgia Military College Columbus Student Government Association spent the month of October collecting canned food to give to those in need. 171 cans were collected in total, which were donated to Feeding the Valley. Make A Difference Day, sponsored by USA Weekend magazine and Points of Life, is the largest national day of community service. Institutionally, GMC has participated in the program yearly since 1996. The institution-wide goal for 2013 was to collect over 46,000 canned goods, representing the population of Baldwin County where GMC’s main campus is located. GMC Columbus’ Student Government Association President, Thad Norman of Columbus, enjoyed being a part of the SGA’s most recent community service project. “It felt so good to help other people, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to do so,” Norman said. Norman believes that “caring for others [is] an important part of life.” Under Norman’s leadership, GMC Columbus’ SGA plans to host even more community-focused projects throughout the coming year. For more than two decades, USA Weekend and Points of Light have joined together to sponsor Make A Difference Day, which is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday in October. This national day of community service connects people with opportunities to serve, increases the strength of communities and promotes civic engagement.
