Georgia Military College Ranked Twelfth Best Community College in the Nation

Georgia Military College Ranked Twelfth Best Community College in the Nation Georgia Military College has been ranked twelfth in Washington Monthly’s 2010 list of “America’s 50 Best Community Colleges.” This ranking has also placed Georgia Military College as the best community college in the Georgia and Alabama area. The Washington Monthly magazine scored community colleges based on two sources of information: the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and graduation rates published by the U.S. Department of Education. The magazine ranked more than 650 community colleges nationwide in order to identify the fifty best community colleges of 2010. Kevin Carey, a writer for Washington Monthly, states, “While all the schools on it [the list] are inexpensive, have open admissions, and are largely unknown outside their local communities, they stand out in teaching and helping students earn degrees. When it comes to quality of instruction they outperform not only their two-year peers, but many elite four-year research universities as well.” One of the reasons Georgia Military College is ranked so high is due to its learner-centered approach, which focuses on the students taking responsibility of their learning and being engaged in the learning process. Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. Some of the majors offered are business administration, criminal justice, education, homeland security, pre-nursing, and psychology. Enrollment for the Fall 2010 term is currently underway.
