Georgia Military College Columbus Students Place in Ethics Essay Contest

Three Georgia Military College Columbus students were recently awarded cash prizes for placing in GMC Columbus’ Fall Ethics Essay Contest. An initiative of GMC’s Ethics Committee, led by GMC Columbus’ Ethics Program Coordinator, Dr. Stephen Barber of Columbus, the contest occurs once per eight-week term. The first place prize was awarded to Taylor Kiratzis, while second place was given to Dominique Thomas, and third to Dewayne Greer, all of Columbus. For her topic, second place winner Dominique Thomas chose empathy, which she defines as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Thomas believes she has a thorough understanding of empathy because she tries to practice it every day by “encouraging [her] coworkers, family members, children, husband, and anyone . . . who may need a kind word.” Third place winner Dewayne Greer has placed in several Ethics Essay contests at GMC Columbus, and enjoys “a wave of excitement every time” as well as a “warm, fuzzy feeling” caused by “know[ing] that others share my beliefs.” A committee of faculty and staff members chose the three winners based on their demonstrated understanding of their respective topics, their use of critical thinking skills, and the quality of their examples.
