Georgia Military College Columbus Named a Military Friendly School for 2014

For the fifth year in a row, GMC Columbus has been named to the Military Friendly Schools list, which honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are striving to ensure success for America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students. The more than 1,700 colleges, universities, and trade schools on the list of Military Friendly Schools are compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 schools nationwide. Georgia Military College Columbus was chosen as a Military Friendly School for its academic accreditation and efforts to recruit and retain active-duty military, military family members, and veteran students. GMC Columbus implements policies that aid military students, including waiving student fees and technology fees. GMC Columbus also offers online classes to accommodate a variety of schedules, and the college has an admissions assistant stationed on Ft. Benning to assist active duty military and their family members with the enrollment process and registering on the GoArmyEd web site. Donavan Ford of Columbus agrees that GMC Columbus is a great fit for military-affiliated students. Ford stated, “I thought my transition from the military to college was going to be the hardest thing.” Ford said his transition was easy because of GMC Columbus’ staff: “[they are] friendly and down to earth. Everyone is very approachable and willing to talk about anything with you. They are here to help you in any way.” When asked what it was like to transition from being in the army to being a college student, Ford stated, “with the staff to reassure me, along with the [other] students’ encouragement, GMC feels like family, and I want to come to school every day.” Ford said that he regularly recommends GMC Columbus to his military-affiliated friends. Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. The majors offered are Business Administration, Criminal justice, Education, General Studies, Health and Physical Education, History, Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Information Technology, Logistics Management, Paralegal Studies, Pre-Nursing, Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work.
