The Georgia Military College Columbus Student Government Association started off February with a challenge to students, faculty, and staff: bring in one roll of toilet paper – or more – and help SGA build a toilet paper wall that would line the school library. The idea started with one student who wanted to support a cause in the community. This student, Melinda Barreras of Columbus, wanted to provide basic household supplies to the Gatehouse Rehabilitation and Recovery Center. Barreras brought the cause to an SGA meeting, and the “Line the Library” project was born. Because toilet paper is an essential and often taken-for-granted supply, SGA encouraged each person on campus to help a good cause by sparing a roll. By the end of February, the designated wall of the library was filled with 315 rolls of toilet paper, stacked to the ceiling. Barreras was thrilled with the height of the tissue tower, and students were, too. Student Ambassador Tyree Womack of Columbus liked the fact that SGA was giving back in a simple but important way. “People need toilet paper, and it is important to help people who need it most,” he said. SGA member Monique Greene of Columbus agreed, saying, “I had never heard of a toilet paper drive before. It was something very different.” Greene added, “It is important we help in any way, even if it is by collecting something like toilet paper.” Students had fun watching the tower grow from one roll to hundreds, and SGA is looking forward to coming up with a new project for spring that will be just as fun. Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. Washington Monthly recently ranked Georgia Military College as the best 2-year college in Georgia/Alabama, and 12th best in the nation. Some of the majors offered are business administration, criminal justice, education, homeland security, pre-nursing, and psychology. Enrollment for the Spring 2012 term is currently underway.
