Columbus Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Campus

Faculty, staff, and community representatives gathered at 7300 Blackmon Road June 14 to break ground on a $5 million campus for GMC’s Columbus campus. The new building will provide students with advanced technologies such as a campus-wide, state-of-the art wireless mesh network, Promethean smart boards, and virtual desktop services. Instructional enhancements extend beyond technology. Classrooms will be outfitted so they may be easily reconfigured to support various active learning strategies being used by GMC faculty, including traditional, hybrid, and online course work. Georgia Military College President Major General Peter J. Boylan spoke at the groundbreaking, inspiring the crowd with the story of how GMC Columbus had grown and changed. “We have people here who dream the impossible, and then see it through,” Boylan said. Also speaking at the groundbreaking were Columbus Campus Director Ron Hundley, the Student Government Association President Matthew Williams and Councilman Gary Allen of District 6. Melinda Barreras, a business major from Columbus, said “I feel blessed to be a part of this college with its forward thinking and momentum. The potential for growth is great with this new campus.” Barreras added, “This was my first time getting to shovel groundbreaking dirt. I am honored.” GMC Columbus plans to begin offering classes at the new campus in January 2013.
