Coach Williams finalist for 2015 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame
Georgia Military College director of athletics and head football coach Bert Williams has been named a finalist for induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2015. The Consulting Committee of the GSHF – comprised of board members, hall of fame members, sports media representatives and athletics administrators – met on August 7 and voted to send 36 finalists from an original list of 189 nominees on to the Honors Court for a final vote. The Honors Court will meet in September and select the next class of inductees from these 36 finalists and the 2015 GSHF Induction Ceremony will be held on February 21 in Macon. In addition to those selections, one nominee from the Senior category will also be chosen to enshrinement. “I am stunned and honored to even be considered for such recognition,” said Williams. ”When I think of the many, many great Georgians honored in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and those also being considered to join in this group, I am truly humbled to even be in this conversation.” Williams is entering his 18th year overall with the GMC athletics department, including his 15th year as the director of athletics and head football coach with the Bulldogs. Williams previously served as offensive coordinator during his first three years at GMC. Williams led the 2001 GMC football team to the school’s first-ever national championship when the Bulldogs knocked off Butler Community College (Kan.) 31-19 in the Sea Island Company Golden Isles Bowl in Brunswick, Ga. Williams has also compiled a 113-37 record in his 14 years at the helm of the GMC football program while producing 70 National Junior College Athletic Association All-America players and three national players-of-the-year. A four-year letterman at Davidson College (N.C.) where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Williams began his coaching career at the University of Georgia (1990-93) and then served as offensive coordinator at Union College (Ky.) for three seasons (1994-96) before coming to GMC. Williams and his wife, Cathy, are the proud parents of two sons – Parker (17) and Zachary (13).
