GMC students mark President’s Day with parade

GMC students gathered in formation today to the annual President’s Day Parade at Grant Field on the GMC campus.
Guest speaker Ken Vance addressed those gathered prior to the review of the cadets. The event has long been a tradition at GMC and is more meaningful this year as this marks the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, one of the original honorees of the day.
The ceremony, widely attended by community members and parents took place under nearly cloudless skies in brilliant weather.
The day, set aside as a federal holiday to honor US Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is celebrated on the third Monday of February. The holiday has roots in the celebration of Washington’s birthday and was modified in 1971 to the third Monday of the month. Lincoln’s Feb. 12 birthday and Washington’s Feb. 22 birthday are now routinely observed together on the federal holiday.
