Three GMC Prep Teachers Awarded Tri-County EMC Bright Ideas Grants

Georgia Military College Prep School is celebrating three of its outstanding educators who were awarded Tri-County EMC Bright Ideas Grants. The grants, designed to fund innovative and engaging classroom projects, recognize the teachers’ dedication to enhancing education and creating unique learning opportunities.

Brittany Matthews, an eighth-grade Georgia History teacher, received a grant of over $1,000 to provide flexible seating options for her classroom. As a first-year teacher, Matthews was inspired by her own high school experience and her teacher training to create a comfortable and engaging environment. “I wanted to move away from traditional desks and give my students the option to choose their seating to enhance learning,” Matthews shared.

Katrina Shy, a fifth-grade math teacher, applied for the grant to address Georgia’s updated math standards, which emphasize hands-on learning. Shy plans to use her $730 grant to purchase math manipulatives like fraction tiles and other tools that provide students with visual and tactile learning experiences. “Manipulatives give students a chance to engage with math in ways that make it accessible for all learners, regardless of ability,” she explained.

Brittany Nichols, GMC’s third-grade science teacher, received $1,500 to introduce a hydroponic tower garden to her classroom. With experience in hydroponics, she wanted her students to experience growing plants year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Students will also learn to monitor pH levels and practice responsibility through this project. “We’ll tie in farm-to-table activities, giving students a chance to cook with what they’ve grown,” she said.

GMC Prep School congratulates these educators for their creativity and commitment to student success. Their projects reflect the school’s dedication to fostering innovation in education.
