Valdosta Donation Doubles

Dear Editor,
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be the recipient of the proceeds from a campus record-breaking fundraiser. Ellen Stevens and several of the students in her Macroeconomics class chose to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as their service-learning project for the term. Ms. Stevens’s class, partnered with Miss Sara’s Day Care, held a silent auction, gas raffle and bake sale at the college campus on May 1, 2006. The Valdosta Daily Times printed pictures of the event and reported the fundraiser total of $1,750.00. Several hours after the article was released, a member of the community, who requested to remain anonymous, challenged the college to raise an additional $250.00 to raise the total collection to an even $2,000.00. The caller promised she and her husband would match the funds the college collected up to $2,000.00. She stated, “Now all you guys have to do is figure out how to raise the rest.” Upon hearing the challenge, Sara Hendrix promptly stated that she would guarantee that the money was raised. Likewise Georgia Military College’s staff quickly donated and collected most of the needed balance in several hours. Several people in the community, as well as faculty and staff members, offered to make up the difference if there was any chance the money would not be raised. Thanks to the combined efforts of Miss Sara’s Day Care parents and staff, Georgia Military College, the Valdosta Daily Times, and the Valdosta community, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive $4,123.82 this year.
