Seagraves Receives Naval ROTC Scholarship to Attend Auburn

GMC Prep School senior Zach Seagraves was recently awarded a Naval ROTC Scholarship to attend Auburn University in the fall of 2008. The value of this full-tuition, four-year scholarship is $180,000 and will include tuition, fees, books and a monthly stipend.

According to Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Sampson of the Navy Recruiting Command, Zach far exceeded all qualifications for the scholarship. He said, “There are 12 selection boards throughout the year and Zach was chosen very early on for this scholarship due to his exemplary service to the community, his extracurricular activities and his academic achievement. This prestigious scholarship is highly sought after and we look for well-rounded students. Zach was far and beyond what we look for in a recipient.” Sampson said Zach will have a minimum commitment of four years active duty in the Navy with a possible additional four years in the naval reserves.

Seagraves, who began attending GMC Prep in the sixth grade, would like to become a naval pilot once he graduates from Auburn. He will follow in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, LCDR Clarence Amos, a WWII Veteran, his grandfather, James R. Williams, Sr., and his uncle, MCPO John Kemp, a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Zach is a C/CPT serving as a company commander and is a 4 year letterman in football, 2 years in baseball, and 1 year in track. He recently landed the role of “Doody” in the spring musical, Grease. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, and has participated in fund raisers and community service projects with both. He has participated in benefit concerts for Katrina Victims and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund and has been a regular participant in Relay for Life. Zach is also active in his church youth group at Northridge Christian Church and with Young Life of Baldwin County. His parents are Scott and Karen Seagraves of Milledgeville.
