Professor Jill Koopman is GMC’s College Educator of the 2016-2017 School Year. Professor Koopman is an English professor at Georgia Military College’s Fairburn Campus. She was selected out of 128 fulltime faculty members at GMC. In addition to her many contributions to student success within the classroom, she engages students outside of the classroom by getting students to participate in the arts in and around Atlanta and hosting poetry readings for students. Serving as the Essayons Literary Magazine Club advisor since 2015, Professor Koopman guided the production of the first publication for the Fairburn campus. Her main goal with Essayons is to provide students a place where they can make friends, have fun, be creative, express their ideas in print, as well as gain experience in planning, organizing, advertising, managing, and performing an original creative work.

“I am honored and delighted to be named Educator of the Year by Georgia Military College,” said Professor Jillian Koopman. “I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work among such talented, supportive colleagues as well as such driven, inspiring students. My goal is to constantly grow and learn as an educator in order to continue to help students develop their abilities and skills successfully."

In addition to their intellectual development, Professor Koopman is also very interested in students’ personal creative development and in their growth via the arts. She believes that self-expression and exposure to others’ words and creativity is an important and healthy way to build self-confidence and character. She wants GMC students to enjoy their college experience in a fun, spontaneous, and challenging way, as she did when she was a college student.
