GMC to Host Signing for New Women’s Golf Team

Georgia Military College to Host Signing for New Women's Golf Team

This is a historic first for Georgia Military College – GMC’s first women’s golf team begins their inaugural season this August. Coach Charles Van Horn III will be leading the pack of five ladies for the inaugural season. On Monday, July 23, 2018, GMC will host a signing for the new women’s golf team to celebrate the kick-off of this new program.

GMC’s Athletic Director, Bert Williams, says the addition of the women’s golf team has been in the works for some time, and says he’s ready to make this program a success at GMC.

“We have discussed the addition of several sports for at least four to five years with women’s golf being one of the primary programs we wanted to bring on board for a number of reasons,” Williams said. “We took the time to do a research study with Hanover Research [a research company that provides educational solutions and insight into student needs at each stage of the educational journey] that supported the addition and also did our own research into the viability to bringing this program on and the opportunity for it to be successful.”

Abigail Summersill, Amanda, Hannah Grace, Josie, Isabella Samples, and Emma Long make up the inaugural Georgia Military College women’s golf team. Some of the team members are Georgia natives, others are from out of state, and one has been living in the Philippines for the last three and a half years.  Each player says they’re looking forward to making the move to Milledgeville and getting the season started. Coach Williams says there is a lot of work to do in putting a new team together, but he believes the outcome will be worth it.

“I am really excited to see this program come to life this year and to watch it grow and develop in the years to come,” Williams said. “We have a history of success with our men’s golf program and with the on-campus tools we have to support our women’s golfers and the relationships we have developed with the Club at Lake Sinclair and other courses in Greensboro, I am hopeful we will have a strong and steady road to regional and national competitiveness.”
