GMC to celebrate 100th Armistice Anniversary, Host Veterans Day Parade

GMC to Celebrate 100th Armistice Anniversary, Host Veterans Day Parade

This upcoming weekend is very special for the United States of America. As we honor the Veterans that have served our country, we also recognize the significance of Armistice Day. Armistice Day is commemorated every year on the 11th of November to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiegne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

On Friday, November 9, 2018, Georgia Military College will host an Armistice Day Ceremony, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the document that ended WWI. GMC Corps of Cadets and GMC Prep School Cadet Honor Guard will officially retire a 48-star flag, and the flag detail will be dressed in vintage WWI uniforms. GMC howitzer will be fired prior to the bugler playing “To The Color,” followed by a moment of silence and the playing of echoing Taps. An institution-wide moment of silence will be held following the ceremony so that the entire team at Georgia Military College can honor those that served in WWI together.

The following Monday, November 12, 2018, Georgia Military College will host a joint Veterans Day Parade at the Georgia War Veterans Home. GMC Cadets will meet with residents and assist them in a lead out following the parade. Following the parade, portraits of Veterans will be displayed in the Georgia War Veterans Home. The GMC Prep School art students will reveal their work to the Veterans on Monday morning.
