Georgia Military College Teams Up with the Salvation Army to Provide Hope and Opportunity to the Community

Georgia Military College (GMC) is teaming up with the Salvation Army to provide computers to be installed at the store to benefit community members that don’t have access to technology otherwise.

Across Milledgeville and Baldwin County, many kids don’t have the technological resources needed to adequately learn. Technology is a big part of today’s world but some students can only use technology in school, even when it’s required for homework assignments and after-school work. That is a concern that Program

Director for the Collins P. Lee Harrisburg Community Center, Director for the Salvation Army, and Baldwin County NAACP President, Cynthia Edwards, says affects students’ performance in Baldwin County.

Over the last few years, GMC has loaned computers to the Harrisburg Community Center, benefitting not only the students in the center’s after-school program, but also the adults of the community. Now Edwards has asked GMC to do the same at the Salvation Army in Milledgeville.

“We envision the computers to be used for the entire community, but especially for the community across from the Salvation Army at the Riverbend Apartments,” Edwards said. “We also envision helping the community reach the 21st century by assisting in showing them how to navigate technology, which has become a way of life.”

Tiffany Bayne, Assistant Director at GMC’s Milledgeville Campus, says it’s important for GMC to help the community in this way.

“These sorts of partnerships are driven by GMC’s mission ‘to produce educated citizens and contributing members of society,’” Bayne said. “As an open admissions institution and community-based organization, this initiative helps us engage with prospective students and their families, introducing them to endless opportunities that GMC offers.”

The five computers were installed at the Salvation Army store and are now operational and available to the community for use.
