GMC-Augusta Student Balances College and Cancer
Latoya Lewis and her two sons
Latoya Lewis is in her final quarter at Georgia Military College’s (GMC) Augusta campus. She’ll walk in graduation this May, in large part, because she wants her two boys, ages 5 and 15, to see it. For Lewis, attending GMC is a family affair and her children are her motivation and her everything. Her husband, Hase Cola, also attends GMC-Augusta, as does her step-daughter, and her sister. Her son will be a dual enrollment student here next year.
Aside from being a wife and mother of two, Lewis is also a Veteran. She faithfully and honorably served in the United States Army for 19 years. She is all about making a lasting impression and leaving a legacy. She’s not one who does what she does for accolades or praise, but because she’s a strong woman of faith, who tries to uplift others.
“We all are going through things,” Lewis said. “I try to be a light in others’ days, every day.”
Lewis is a dual major student at GMC, who will be earning Associates degrees in Psychology and Middle Grades Education. She has been on the President’s List or the Dean’s List for her entire time at GMC! She says, “Being able to do this was a surprise to me!” Lewis not only excels in academics, but she’s also the President of the Veteran’s Club, the Vice President of GMC-Augusta’s Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Debate Team, and a member of the Criminal Justice Club.
Most impressive, Lewis has accomplished everything while fighting cervical cancer. She was diagnosed just before the summer term and has since endured 19 chemotherapy treatments. The faculty and staff at GMC describe her as a determined fighter, a friend to anyone and everyone, someone who speaks up for others and what she believes in, and a woman dedicated to education; achieving her dreams and encouraging and inspiring others to do the same!
At GMC-Augusta, we are honored to have Lewis as a student. We are encouraged by her drive, her positive attitude, her strength and her determination. We are thankful for her service, both as a Veteran, as well as her attitude of service to GMC. She is a cheerful giver, with a true attitude of gratitude. Soon, she’ll be an Alumni; one who no doubt will go on to achieve greatness and bring honor and pride to our Institution.
