GMC Prep Senior Weighs Service Academy Options
Georgia Military College Preparatory School aims for students to obtain a character-based education that will lead them to successful careers in their adult life. GMC Prep has a many students to become successful in their endeavors and GMC Prep is excited to add another student to that list: Kaylon Farley. He has received Prep School appointments to not just one, but two service academies, the United States Military Academy West Point and the United States Coast Guard Academy.
“It’s really a blessing, especially to have options,” Farley said. “You really don’t hear of too many people down in Milledgeville having offers from the Coast Guard Academy Prep School and the West Point Academy Prep School.”
Farley is the first Georgia Military College Prep student to receive Prep School appointments to two service academies.
“I am just so proud for the young man,” said Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, President of GMC. “He’s worked so hard and has really committed himself. To see that he’s now gotten Prep School appointments to two different service academies, it’s just wonderful.”
Farley is GMC Prep’s highest-ranking Cadet, the Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. He started his journey at Georgia Military College Prep in middle school and says the transition was a difficult one at first.
“When I got to GMC Prep, I started as a B, C student. That’s when I came to realize how valuable an education here really is,” Farley said. “All the teachers and faculty and staff want to see you succeed and prosper. So that kind of sparked a light in my heart that I want to have a brighter future for myself.”
GMC Prep School Principal, Col. Pam Grant, says Farley has grown tremendously over the years in his academics and his character.
“From the time Kaylon entered GMC in the 7th grade, it was obvious that he had so much potential,” Grant said. “It has been so rewarding to watch him grow, develop, and mature into the fine young man he is today. I am so proud of Kaylon's appointments and his desire to serve our country, and I am excited to see what his future holds.”
Helping students obtain a brighter future is something Lt. Gen. Caldwell says is a key effort at GMC.
“We continue to work on developing character and we always aim to raise the intellect of our students, and that really shines through when you see that our students have the opportunity to apply to a service academy and to be accepted,” Caldwell said. “I mean the fact that today we have at the five service academies, we have five of our Prep School students currently attending different service academies, both United States Airforce Academy, United States Military Academy, and United States Coastguard Academy.”
Farley says he’s excited to join those distinguished alumni as he transitions into his college career.
“It’s nothing but God,” Farley said. “I can see Him working in every circumstance in my life and this is just another proof that God is still watching over me and carrying me through this journey. I’m walking in God’s will and that’s what it’s all about.”
With a tough choice to make, Farley says he and his mom discussed the best possibilities for his future, and he’s made his decision on where he’s going to accept an appointment.
“My mom and I had a long talk about everything and I’ve made my mind up… I’m going to the Coast Guard,” Farley said. “I’m kind of walking into the unknown and I’m trusting God as I go and I believe He’s going to take me to greater places. I’m so excited.”
