GMC Celebrates its 100th BAS Graduate
Georgia Military College Celebrates 100th Bachelor of Applied Science Degree Graduate
In 2017, Georgia Military College launched its Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program offerings. BAS degrees are designed to enhance the occupational/technical education provided by an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or similar degree program. Where the AAS degree prepares students in technical disciplines, GMC’s BAS degree programs are designed to prepare students for career advancement opportunities in supervisory and management roles in their technical or occupational field. This summer, GMC celebrated its 100th BAS degree graduate, Ms. Jocelyn Dixon.
Dixon says she pursued a BAS degree to be able to advance in her chosen career field.
“I’m currently working as a Financial Aid Counselor at North Georgia Technical College, where I earned two Associates degrees in Commercial Photography and Culinary Arts,” Dixon said. “I wanted to pursue a BAS degree in Supervision and Management to be able to move into a Director or Management position, both of which require a Bachelor’s degree.”
As a non-traditional student, Dixon says GMC’s online flexibility was the best option for her when it came to pursuing a BAS degree.
“I needed the option to complete my program fully online, as I work full-time,” Dixon said. “GMC’s Global Online College allowed me to reach my postsecondary educational goals while I worked. As a full-time student and full-time employee, I am thankful for GMC’s quarter system because the program allowed me to earn my degree faster than other institutions. GMC accepted all my previous college credit hours earned at North Georgia Technical College, meaning I didn’t have to start completely over thanks to their articulation agreement with the college.”
Now with her BAS degree in hand, Dixon plans to take the certified credential in Financial Aid, and advance in her career. Other students can do the same in any of GMC’s other BAS degree programs: Business Management, Supervision and Management, and Supply Chain Management and Logistics. This fall, GMC added a BAS degree program in Healthcare Management, and plans to add more degree program options soon. GMC’s BAS programs are offered across the institution’s 14 campuses, as well as fully online through Georgia Military’s Global Online College, which is the route Dixon went.
Dr. Tianna Marynell, GMC Division Chair of Bachelor of Applied Science Degree Programs, says celebrating GMC’s 100th BAS graduate is a huge milestone for the institution.
“We have experienced continued growth in our three BAS degree programs and reaching the milestone of the 100th BAS graduate is evidence that GMC’s BAS programs offer viable options for AAS degree students to complete a Bachelor’s degree,” Marynell said. “Our BAS students understand the value that a Bachelor’s degree can provide towards achieving their career advancement goals. With the recent addition of our BAS in Healthcare Management, GMC is now able to offer AAS healthcare graduates the opportunity to complete a Bachelor’s degree in their healthcare field. We continue to explore other degree programs that offer similar opportunities to AAS graduates in other career fields, and we’re excited about the growth of this program at our institution.”
