GMC celebrates Constitution Day

This morning, the Prep Class of 2015 was presented copies of the US Constitution in celebration of the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787.  On hand to give out the copies was Janice Westmoreland and members of the Patriot’s Tea Party.

The 136th Corps of Cadets at Georgia Military College will hold a command retreat in honor of Constitution Day and in recognition of all Prisoners of War and Missing in Action on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 2:45 p.m., on Grant Parade.  This will be the first Command Retreat for the new school year.

During the retreat, junior college student Helen Oh will be recognized for representing the United States and placing 51st in the Air Pistol Women’s Junior event during the 51st International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Spain on September 12.

The term "Retreat" is taken from the French word "Retraite" and refers to the evening assembly –usually held at sunset– when units took a final roll call of their number. The word "Retraite" means "retirement".  After this assembly, members of the units would retire to a place of safety, and would remain secure until reveille the following morning. The custom of conducting a "Command Retreat" dates back to the 18th century.  During a Command Retreat, a final roll is taken of members of the units, and in their assembled presence, the National Flag is retired for the evening.

Everyone is invited to attend.
