GMC Cadet Competes in Olympic Shooting Competition in Brazil

From Los Angeles, California, to Milledgeville, Georgia, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Cadet Sarah Choe has had a whirlwind past few months. She arrived at Georgia Military College as a United States Coast Guard Academy Preparatory Scholar in August, but soon after hopped on a plane to Brazil to compete in the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol competition, representing Team USA. Out of the U.S. athletes, Choe ranked highest taking 40th place. Although she and her team didn’t win the top spot, she says she did her best and is grateful to have had the chance to compete.

Choe didn’t grow up competing in the sport. She only started the summer before her freshman year of high school, but quickly achieved success.

“I never really expected to reach this kind of large-scale competition, nor did I want to,” Choe said. “I’m very quiet and shy, so competing in front of hundreds of people was, and continues to be, a very daunting experience for me. However, I choose to compete at an international level and it’s my way of showing appreciation for my coach, family, and friends, for their support and encouragement.”

Choe plans to complete her Preparatory year at GMC, with hopes of receiving an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where she plans to major in Government.
