GMC Alumnus COL Nate Stone Assumes Command of 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team
Georgia Military College proudly congratulates GMC Alumnus COL Nathaniel “Nate” Stone (Junior College ‘00) on his assumption of command of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), Georgia Army National Guard, in a formal Change of Command ceremony held on Sunday, February 2nd.
A native of Monticello, Georgia, COL Stone takes command of the historic 48th IBCT, a brigade composed of over 4,000 Soldiers with a lineage dating back to 1825. He succeeds COL Jason Baker, who has led the unit since 2021 through domestic response missions and its most recent global deployment.
COL Stone began his military career in 1998 as a private in the 48th Brigade. He attended Georgia Military College and later University of North Georgia, commissioning as an officer in 2003. Throughout his career, he has held key leadership roles within the 48th IBCT, notably serving as battalion commander of the Cumming-based 3rd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment from 2017 to 2020. He has deployed in support of combat operations in Iraq (2005-2006) and Afghanistan (2009-2010, 2019).
Stone’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal with “V” device, the Bronze Star Medal with three oakleaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Army Achievement medal with one oak leaf cluster. He has also earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
