Georgia Military College celebrates 139 years!

Georgia Military College celebrates 139 years!

October 14, 2018, was the birthday of Georgia Military College. We have been providing education, character development, and opportunity for 139 years!

As you know, on October 14, 1879, the Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College was established by the Georgia General Assembly with classes beginning in January 1880 with an enrollment of 219 students; and in 1900, Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College was renamed to Georgia Military College.

Our mission has remained pretty much the same and today GMC continues to fulfill the mission of producing educated citizens and contributing members of society in an environment conducive to the development of the intellect and character of its students.

Today we have so much to celebrate with some historic firsts:

Several years ago, we—the Board of Trustees, GMC Leadership, faculty, and staff—established a strategic plan to take us to 2029.  It was an ambitious plan where we laid out with our Four Strategic Initiatives or as we call them, our “Four Big ideas”.  Looking back over the last 5 years we’ve accomplished a lot of what we’ve set out to do and this past year has been huge in terms of milestones.

•  In our College:
O  BAS program, started in 2016, this year we had our first graduates.  15 students now have their four year BAS degree from GMC.  We also have over 100 other students currently enrolled in the program.
O  The number of students being awarded an Associate Degree this past year was 1,711.  This is a historical high for GMC.
O  Our college enrollment this past year was 14,930 students.  This is also another historical milestone for GMC.
O  Annual Full Time Equivalent Enrollment this past year was 8,166.  Another historic milestone for GMC.
O  We opened up two more new Campuses, now giving us 14 College Campuses and an Online Campus.
O  In 2018 Georgia Military College was named the 14th Best Community College in the Nation and the #1 Community College in the State Of Georgia; and
O  And we were just notified this month that our BAS program in Supervision and Management was ranked #2 in the nation for affordable online colleges.

•  In our Prep School:
O  New Program:  Last year we added Visual Arts to the Fine Arts program.  If you’ve been following the news and reading the Cadence, you’ll see the amazing work our 6th through 8th grades have done just in the first year.
O  100% high school graduation rate for the 9th consecutive year.
O  100% college acceptance rate, with 95% enrolling in a post-secondary institution in Fall 2018, 1 student enlisting in the US Army and 1 student choosing to serve his church through a mission experience.
O  Second year we have participated in the UK International Exchange Program with the Royal Hospital School of England.
O  New Classes:  4th and 5th grades returned to GMC prep this year for the first time since the 1950’s.  We’ve reached our goal of 80 students total (40 each grade).  We held our ground breaking in May for the Jenkins Hall renovation and our new Prep School Annex building.
O  AP News:  3 of our 4 AP courses had pass rates that exceed both State and Global pass rates.  AP Language exceeded for the 7th consecutive year.  AP Biology for the 6th consecutive year.  Our AP Calculus students set a record with their 80% pass rate which is the highest pass rate ever for this course.

Today, October 15th, we celebrated our birthday. We got an early start with a joint formation between our College Corps of Cadets, Prep School Cadets, and 4th and 5th graders, gathered on Grant Parade Field this morning to sing “Happy Birthday” to GMC. Later in the morning we gathered in the atrium of the college academic building for a proclamation reading by GMC Board of Trustees Vice Chairman, George Hogan, and a cake presentation by GMC Alum and Owner of Slice Custom Cakes, Shannon Stubbs. It has been a wonderful day of celebrating Georgia Military College!
