The President of Georgia Military College, Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell IV, and the Board of Trustees, will host the college’s fifteenth annual Grand Tattoo on Friday, April 15, at 6:00 pm on the East Steps of the Old Capitol Building.  This year’s honorees will be COL and Mrs. Fred Van Horn, USA (Ret.). 

Colonel Van Horn has served our nation in peacetime and in war and both at home and abroad over a distinguished military career spanning over 30 years.  At Georgia Military College (GMC), he has served as Commandant of Cadets, Dean of Students, Character Educator, Executive Vice President, Interim President and Special Assistant to the President.  With over 20 years of service to GMC, Colonel Van Horn has been recognized by the Board of Trustees as GMC’s first Executive Vice President Emeritus.  Since his retirement in February, he and his wife, Tomi, continue to live in Milledgeville.

The Grand Tattoo is an outdoor military exercise given by troops as evening entertainment, and is a program steeped with history and tradition.  Georgia Military College’s fifteenth annual Grand Tattoo will feature the John Mohr Mackintosh Pipes and Drums Band, the GMC Color Guard and GMC Marching Band. 

The deeply moving ceremony will conclude with the formal retirement of the Nation’s Colors by a fourteen-member flag detail to mark the end of the day.  The community is cordially invited to observe the outdoor portion of the ceremony from the walkways left and right of the east steps of the Old Capitol.  Suitable for all ages, the Military Tattoo will last about 40 minutes.  Visitors and guests are asked to arrive no later than 5:50 p.m.  In case of inclement weather the outdoor portion of the Tattoo will be canceled.
