Georgia Military College – Columbus DLC Celebrates National Make a Difference Day

Faculty and staff members of the Columbus campus made their contribution in support of National Make a Difference Day by volunteering for an afternoon for the Open Door Community House, which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to meet the basic needs and to empower the low to moderate income people of Muscogee County and surrounding areas.

The GMC employees spent the afternoon assisting with their after school program. Robert Strain, E-Library Associate and Joe Emehiser, On-Site Coordinator both served as base coaches for the children as they played in their kickball tournament. Shepherd Chuites, Assistant Registrar and Maud Gonzales, Financial Aid Assistant both joined opposing teams and helped keep the game running smoothly by helping the children know who was next up to kick. Ms. Chuites and Ms. Gonzales also actually took a turn and ran the bases. Unfortunately, Ms. Gonzales wound up in a “hot box” between third base and home plate and was tagged out by one of the children. Suzanne Previte, Life KEYS Coordinator, Tammy Palmiter, Bookstore and Business Office, and Tracie Price all helped with the snacks.

When asked what was the most pronounced thing about visiting the Open Door Ms. Chuites replied, “that the staff members who worked at this organization truly seemed to care about the children and that they actually played with the children rather than being sitting on the sidelines and telling the children to go play.” Also the children all seemed very happy to be there.”
