Alumnus Establishes Ethics Chair

Stephen K. Simpson of Macon, Georgia, has generously established a fund for an endowed Chair of Ethics through the Georgia Military College Foundation. This endowment will be named The Peter J. Boylan Chair of Ethics, in honor of Georgia Military College President, Major General Peter J. Boylan.

Mr. Simpson said, “I am pleased to announce that I have agreed to provide the initial funding for an ethics chair for Georgia Military College. The initial goal is $500,000, but we want to build it to $2 million. It wasn’t really hard to decide for whom this endowment should be named. When we look back and remember when the 20th president got here in 1992 this institution was on the verge of financial collapse. It needed leadership, it needed ethics, it needed someone with the leadership ability of General Peter Boylan, so it with great pleasure that I announce my recommendation, pending final approval, of the Peter J. Boylan Chair of Ethics.”

Of this recognition, MG Peter Boylan said, “All I can say is thank you. We’ve done our best. I think that the banners around the campus exemplify, typify what it is that this school is about. That’s not something that started with Peter Boylan. That started way back in 1879 when this school was created. With all of the graduates that have passed through the gates, all of them believe in Duty, Honor County. All of them have served their country in one form or another so I’m just proud to be a part of that.”

The endowment is being established at the level of approximately $300,000. In addition to Mr. Simpson’s generosity, several of the area Kaolin companies (Thiele Kaolin Company, Burgess Pigment, Imerys and Wilkinson Kaolin Associates, LLC) have contributed to the endowed chair with their gifts toward the ethics program at GMC. The short-term goal for funding this endowed chair is $500,000, with a long-term goal of $2 million.

Elizabeth Sheppard, GMC Vice President for Advancement, said, “We trust that the generosity of Stephen Simpson, the Kaolin companies, and all those who have demonstrated their commitment to this purpose will serve as an inspiration to many who will participate with their gifts toward building this significant endowment through the GMC Foundation.”
